The stark truth: abortion now ends the life of 1 in every 6 babies in Ireland.

The Department of Health has just released the total number of notifications received last year for abortions carried out in Ireland. It reports there were 10,600 abortions in 2025. The new data also shows that over 65,000* abortions have taken place in Ireland since the 2018 law took effect.

Pro Life Campaign spokesperson Eilís Mulroy commented: “The latest figures are deeply concerning. The fact that 10,600 abortions occurred in Ireland in a single year is a very sobering indictment of how Ireland’s abortion regime is operating. It means that 1 in every 6 babies** in Ireland now loses their life to abortion. Over 65,000 abortions occurring in Ireland since the new law took effect is a truly intolerable situation that follows directly from both the actions and failures of the Government. The fact that the number of abortions fell slightly in 2025 over the previous year doesn’t change this reality in any way. The truth is that abortions have increased from 2,879 in 2018 (the year before the new law took effect) to the massive numbers taking place today. It’s 65,000 reasons why government policy in this area has to change.”

Ms Mulroy continued: “8 years on from the introduction of abortion, incredibly, there is still no State-backed service whose sole purpose is to ensure that women conflicted about having an abortion can access timely information and practical support if they wish to continue their pregnancy. The State-funded agencies responsible for addressing unplanned pregnancy operate as a de facto fast-track service to abortion. Even a cursory review of these agencies’ websites suggests that their structures are overwhelmingly geared towards abortion.

“We hear from women all the time who regret their abortions and describe feeling rushed, pressured, or carried along by the process, only to be left feeling abandoned and failed by the State afterwards. What’s happening today is abortion on a completely different scale from what senior politicians like Micheál Martin and Simon Harris promised the public would happen if they voted for ‘Repeal’ in 2018. Yet in recent months, the only changes in which these leaders have shown any interest are proposals that would lead to still more abortions, not less – their support for the removal of the three-day reflection period being a case in point.

“To be fair, Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill has shown a greater willingness to listen to some of these concerns than her recent predecessors in the Department of Health. But without action, nothing will change and there is every danger the reforms needed will not occur during the lifetime of this Government. Women and their babies deserve so much better than this status quo continuing.

“A healthy democracy depends on the representation of different viewpoints in public decision-making. Many people would be shocked to learn that, despite the millions spent on abortion provision, zero public funding is allocated to ensuring women receive information about alternatives before an abortion takes place.

“The question now is simple: with more than 65,000 abortions in seven years, will the Government start to take meaningful action to focus on alternatives? If it allows the spiralling abortion numbers to continue unaddressed, this will become a major political issue between now and the next general election.”
