The grotesque spectacle was approved by city councillors, with Sinn Féin and SDLP members at the forefront of the move.
Supporters say the illumination will mark ‘International Safe Abortion Day’, a well-known international pro-abortion commemoration. But there is nothing laudable about using one of Belfast’s most prominent civic buildings to honour an event that promotes the ending of unborn human life.
Nor is there anything ‘safe’ about abortion for the millions of unborn babies who lose their lives to it every year. The same applies to the thousands of women who regret their abortions and are left dealing with long-term mental and physical consequences. There are also reported cases each year in countries such as the US of women dying after abortions carried out in so-called ‘safe’ facilities.
These realities appear to count for little with today’s Sinn Féin and SDLP leadership. Instead, we get gimmicks and political set pieces that gloss over the enormity of what is at stake, the immense toll of legalised abortion and the disregard for human life it fosters. When the ending of human life is presented as something ‘safe’ and worthy of celebration, it is a stark sign of how far society has lost its way.
11 city councillors, representing Sinn Féin, the SDLP, Alliance and the Green Party, voted in favour of the illumination.
Pro-life organisations Precious Life, Both Lives and SPUC Northern Ireland, together with numerous faith-based groups, deserve credit for highlighting what is planned for Monday, September 28, and for their efforts to have it called off.
Absolutely horrendous ,can’t understand this need of promoting the murder of innocent children is it a warped way of lessening the awful guilt and remorse that is felt after going through with such an act. Prayer, prayer, prayer is what’s needed.

This is disgusting. SF and SDLP should be ashamed of themselves.
Perhaps it is moot that places where this measure was enabled should be in the spotlight so their viciousness towards prenatal children is high-lit to all!
This in one issue on which I find myself in agreement with the the DUP! – and appalled by the approach of SF and the SDLP.
Such a public event sends the message that there only one point of view “allowed” by society – so much for democracy.
