Providing Women With Real Alternatives To Abortion

  • At present, all roads lead to abortion for any woman facing an unplanned pregnancy. The abortion numbers and way the State-run My Options ‘helpline’ operates, bear this out. For every six babies born in Ireland today, one baby has his or her life ended through abortion – a truly horrifying reality. Ireland’s abortion rate has risen from 2,879 in 2018 to 10,033 in 2023, highlighting the total lack of resources and commitment to addressing women’s needs.¹
  • Abortion is an irreversible life-altering event. For many women, it results in profound heartbreak and regret.²
  • It’s time to genuinely trust women by ending the destructive approach that keeps women in the dark about positive alternatives to abortion. The unbending control at present over policy and what constitutes ‘best practice’ in this area needs to be challenged and overhauled.
  • Urgent political action is needed to address Ireland’s soaring abortion numbers. Those with a proven track record in providing alternatives to abortion should be welcomed to the heart of the decision making process without delay.

Footnotes:

1. The figures above are from the official notifications issued for the years in question. On a related point, even if one accepts at face value the highly questionable figure advanced by abortion supporters that, prior to Repeal, an additional one thousand abortions occurred each year from illegal abortion pills (in addition to the official figures for Irish abortions performed in England), the most up to date figures still point to a massive increase in Irish abortions since the law changed.

2. Three of the numerous peer reviewed studies that can be cited: Abortion and mental health disorders: evidence from a 30-year longitudinal study, David M. Fergusson, L. John Horwood and Joseph M. Boden, British Journal of Psychiatry, 2008, 193:444-451, Abortion in young women and subsequent mental health, Fergusson DM1, Horwood LJ, Ridder EM. J Child Psychol Psychiatry. 2006 Jan; 47(1):16-24, Pregnancy continuation and organizational religious activity following prenatal diagnosis of a lethal fetal defect are associated with improved psychological outcome, Cope H1, Garrett ME1, Gregory S2, Ashley-Koch A1. 2015 Aug; 35(8):761-8.

With your help, we will succeed in delivering accountability and the introduction of new positive approaches that respect life and protect women.

We will fight for a support system where no woman feels coerced into abortion, and where every woman contemplating abortion is offered information about alternatives and the comprehensive support available to them.

With Your Support Today We Will:

    • Deliver a national billboard campaign (see our first billboard in Dublin above!) drawing attention to the need for positive alternatives to abortion.
    • Organise lobbying of politicians from thousands of pro-life volunteers across Ireland with an instant messaging campaign AND face to face meetings with TDs and Senators.
    • Drive home our message with a huge social media advertising and video campaign which highlights the lack of resources for women seeking positive alternatives to abortion.
