Pro-life veteran, Lord David Alton of Liverpool, is urging opponents of the assisted suicide Bill to act now to help secure its defeat in today’s vote.
With just 12 MPs needing to change their minds, the Bill can still be defeated.
Lord Alton has warned that if the Bill passes, it will “alter the moral landscape of a nation”. Drawing a parallel with the Abortion Act of 1967, he said MPs are now being asked to cross another threshold: from a law that prohibits assisting another person’s suicide to one that would make helping patients end their lives through assisted suicide a lawful part of healthcare.
“At the heart of this debate is a simple question,” Lord Alton said. “When someone is at their most vulnerable, should our law say, ‘We will care for you, protect you and stand beside you’? Or should it offer assistance to end their life?”
He added: “If this Bill ultimately becomes law, our country will never be the same again.”
