Bernarda Brunovic, a blind singer of Swiss-Croatian descent who rose to fame in 2018 as one of the standout performers on The Voice of Germany, was originally slated to perform at the recent M4Music festival in Zurich. However, just one day before her scheduled appearance, festival organisers abruptly dropped her from the bill.

The stated reason? “Safety of the audience and all participants.” The actual reason? Brunovic’s pro-life stance.

Her removal was preceded by a storm of online attacks against her, with a chorus of voices branding her appearance at M4Music as intolerable. Threats of disruption followed. That, it seems, was all it took to get her cancelled. Festival organisers folded almost instantly – her name scrubbed from the lineup as if it had never been there. Her supposed offence? A performance at Zurich’s March for Life in 2023.

Brunovic responded on social media to what happened, saying: “In the past few days, people have spoken about me, but not to me. I’ve been cancelled, excluded, shut out, treated like a danger to society, like a ruin to other people’s reputation. I’ve been cancelled not just from the M4Music stage, but I’ve also been forbidden to even step on to another stage. I’m an artist, a musician who loves life. And I love and respect all people, regardless of their creed, nationality, ethnicity, race, sexual or political orientation, anything. Everybody’s got their right to their opinion or beliefs, and I’ve also got the right to mine.”

A society that permits this level of ideological gatekeeping is steering into dangerous waters. Today it’s Brunovic, but tomorrow it could be a novelist with the wrong essay, or a podcaster who invites the wrong guest. If public participation demands total alignment with prevailing views, then the public sphere risks becoming an even bigger echo chamber – hollow, fearful, and devoid of meaningful exchange.

Thankfully, Brunovic has chosen not to quietly accept the backlash – she’s responding with courage and challenging the unfair treatment directed at her. On the bright side as well, it is becoming more evident with each passing day that an increasing number of people are waking up to the authoritarian tendencies of those who claim to champion progress, yet spend their time shutting down any perspective that doesn’t align with their own.
