The sad passing of Moya Brennan on Monday came as a shock to many, even though she had spoken openly about her illness and the toll pulmonary fibrosis had taken on her health.
The Clannad singer and harpist, who was 73, enjoyed a career spanning more than five decades with the group and as a solo artist. She recorded over 20 albums and received numerous honours, including a Grammy, an Emmy and an Ivor Novello Award.
Beyond her remarkable musical talent, tributes following her passing have highlighted her kind and generous nature, her unaffected attitude toward fame, and the deep importance of her Christian faith in her life.
She regularly addressed in interviews the abortion she underwent at 19, expressing profound regret and remarking at one point: “I wish I knew a little more about it before I went ahead and did it.”
Her song, Perfect Time, includes the words:
“I know forgiveness is the key not pride
I want to heal this pain I hide inside.
Free my fears and promise me
That you won’t let me go
You’re the one to comfort me
The past my God You know
Believe me
I’m not afraid
Teach me
To learn your ways
Carry me
Under your wings
In your perfect time”
A proud native of Gweedore in Co Donegal, she reflected on her distinctive musical style in a recent interview, saying: “People ask me when I play abroad where the Clannad sound comes from and I say if you ever go to Ireland, visit Donegal. The sound is part of the landscape and the atmosphere.”
While she leaves an outstanding musical legacy, her kindness and sincerity leave a lasting impression far beyond her art.
