There has been strong support for retaining the three-day wait from unlikely sources, including individuals who carry out abortions.
One example is Dr Truls Christiansen from Wicklow, writing in The Irish Times, where he said: “As a GP who worked in this service since the beginning, I feel the minimum of three days to contemplate an abortion is essential.”
While we strongly disagree with aspects of his letter, Dr Christiansen makes a noteworthy case for retaining the three-day wait before an abortion.
The support for retaining the three-day wait, even from those who perform abortions, further underlines how wrong-headed and reckless the decision by Micheál Martin and Simon Harris was to support its abolition.
