On Tuesday, in the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, a 29-year-old man was given a suspended sentence for attacking the mother of his children and threatening to kick her unborn baby out of her. The court directed that the man cannot be named for legal reasons.

The woman told gardai that the man, who had a barring order in place against him, entered her house before the assault and refused to leave. He then proceeded to grab her by the throat and began to choke her. He repeatedly punched her in the face, drawing blood. During the attack, he referenced the fact that the woman was pregnant and threatened, as reported in the media, “to kick the unborn baby out of her.”

The woman was 13 weeks pregnant at the time of the assault. She managed to escape from he attack through a window before running to a neighbour’s house to raise the alarm.

The judge sentenced the man to two years in prison which he suspended in full on strict conditions. The judge said he would have imposed a custodial sentence without hesitation were it not for the fact that the man was the sole carer of the children that reside with him.
