Last week, during their Spring General Meeting in Saint Patrick’s College, Maynooth, the Irish Catholic Bishops issued a statement in defence of life and offered their prayerful support for expectant mothers and their unborn children.
Pointing out that just because something is legal does not make it ethically sound, the Bishops statement said: “The existence of laws permitting abortion does not determine it as either being good or true. What was true in advance of the introduction of legalisation for abortion in both jurisdictions on the island of Ireland, remains true today. Every human life is a gift and a blessing and ought not be destroyed or disposed of at will. In Ireland, North and South, specific threats exist to the respect and dignity that is due to every human life, and these threats will always be highlighted and challenged as human life is sacred.”

I agree with you Jack. While it is a help to have them speaking up on it I feel it’s been ignored by all secular media. They never spoke up enough or were convicted enough to defend the life of the unborn before the referendum. There was an absence of clear vocal moral guidance in my opinion from the bishops and most of the clergy. The abuse scandals I feel cowered them. The Bishops were very weak on speaking up for the unborn and I haven’t heard them speaking on the 108 babies born alive following abortion and left to die or thrown in a bin and NO medical help offered

They could have quoted Pope Francis who said “abortion is homicide” Abortion is murder in the first degree our unborn and elderly people are under threat after their life’s work some of our elderly are disgarded while their is no respect or compassion for women in crisis pregnancies. It seems the only options given to them except to murder their unborn defenceless babies. The state should be more supportive of mothers in crisis pregnancies housing health care for the woman and her unborn financial help and counseling. When I read the bishops statement I was looking for the rest of it agree with the comment above very weak in content.

Yes I agree with the above comments. Our bishops left the Pro life side down badly,the child abuse scandals really put the bishops in a box,RTE keep focusing and reshowing those programmes. We need a bishop who can proclaim the teaching of the gospel without fear or favour and take the criticism on the chin without flinching.
It’s not just bishops and priests who need courage and wisdom in speaking up for unborn babies and mothers in crisis, but all of us, myself included, who claim to follow Jesus Christ.
Lord, please help us to see in every child, born and unborn, and every mother and father, the marvelous work of our Creator. Your will be done on earth.
We all stand condemned by our silence, IRELAND is now governed by the media who control our politicians and the minds of the vast majority of the Irish population.
Prepare for the Feast of Divine Mercy. We need it as much as babies in the womb and those who cause havoc in our world.
