Galway East TD Seán Canney took the opportunity on RTÉ’s The Week in Politics to make a spirited defence of the three-day period of reflection before an abortion, after the author of the recently published report of the review of the abortion law recommended it be scrapped.

In reply to a question from Aontú leader Peadar Tóibín TD at last week’s Oireachtas Health Committee meeting, the report’s author, Marie O’Shea, admitted that before making her recommendation on the three-day wait, she never spoke to any of the nearly 4,000 women between 2019-2021 who went for their first abortion appointment but subsequently didn’t proceed with the abortion after the three-day period of reflection had elapsed. Even though evidence based research is repeatedly raised by pro-abortion campaigners as the strong selling point for the recommendations in the report, evidence based research is the one thing noticeably absent from O’Shea’s report throughout. It’s the responsibility of pro-life campaigners to make sure our elected representatives and the general public are fully apprised of this fact.
