The poll published in today’s Irish Times, showing majority support for removing the 8th Amendment will move in the opposite direction as the debate progresses when people have had an opportunity to consider what repeal or replacement of the provision would mean.

According to the Irish Times/iPSOS MRBI poll, when ‘don’t knows’ are excluded, 56% support removal of the 8th and 29% are opposed.

Commenting on the poll results, Cora Sherlock for the Pro Life Campaign said:

“Today’s poll results are largely in keeping with other recent polls on the issue. The public debate for the past month or more has largely featured members of the Government talking about the process and explaining how it is going to take shape.  The debate proper has not started and the case for keeping the 8th Amendment certainly has not received the airing it deserved.  When this happens, I am confident that the polls will move in a pro-life direction.

“The stand out feature of the 8th Amendment is that it has saved tens of thousands of lives.  If it is repealed or replaced, it will inevitably lead to more abortions, which means more babies will lose their lives.  That’s the stark reality of what we face in this debate.”
