Tánaiste’s comments show Government is rattled by opinion polls, says PLC
The Pro Life Campaign has said that today’s comments by Tánaiste Simon Coveney’s favouring repeal of the 8th Amendment are “disappointing and not supported by the facts”.
In his remarks earlier today, the Tánaiste said that repeal was necessary to protect women in pregnancy and that he would be vocal in the campaign to dismantle the 8th Amendment.
Responding to the Tánaiste, PLC spokesperson Dr. Ruth Cullen said:
“It is very disappointing that the Tánaiste is adopting this stance. He knows only too well that the latest official report on safety in pregnancy places Ireland in a leading position in the world, and that Ireland is safer for women in pregnancy than countries like England and the USA, which allow abortion on demand.
“The Tánaiste is also aware that the recent Oireachtas Hearings on abortion, on which the Government is basing its abortion proposal, never examined in any serious way the evidence in this area or the adverse impact of abortion on women.”
She concluded:
“It is very clear that the Government is rattled by recent opinion polls showing a drop in support for repeal and it is starting to look like they are prepared to say almost anything to get their proposal for wide-ranging abortion over the line.”
