Urgent action needed to defeat this bill

Just weeks after the defeat of the Social Democrats abortion bill, the pro-abortion forces are back with another attempt to abolish the three-day wait before an abortion, this time through a Sinn Féin bill.

While it is frustrating to watch TDs spend more Dáil time trying to remove a life-saving provision, we should also see it as a sign of desperation. They simply refuse to let go.

The next few days are once again a test of our collective resolve. Let's respond by exceeding the efforts we made just weeks ago.

We are asking everyone not only to send a ready-to-go virtual postcard to your local TDs, but also to encourage family and friends to do likewise. The more determined our opponents are to remove pro-life safeguards, the more determined we must be to defend them.

Your efforts were pivotal in defeating the Soc Dems bill. This week's bill will be harder to defeat, but if we pull out all the stops, we can do it.

Please select your constituency, send the instant message, and then share the link with family and friends.

Thank you sincerely for your ongoing commitment and support.

The message that will be sent to your TD

Dear Oireachtas Member,

I am contacting you to express my deep concern at the Sinn Féin bill to abolish the three-day reflection period before an abortion, coming only weeks after the defeat of a similar Social Democrats proposal.

HSE data shows that between 2019 and 2024, 10,426 women who attended an abortion appointment did not return after the three-day wait. These women were given time to reflect and chose to continue their pregnancies — solid evidence of the life-saving impact of this provision.

Abortion now ends the lives of 1 in every 6 babies in Ireland and the three-day wait is one of the few remaining safeguards that has demonstrably saved lives.

In 2023, the Chair of the Three Year Review of the abortion law admitted at an Oireachtas Health Committee meeting that before recommending the abolition of the three-day wait, she did not consult any of the thousands of women who changed their minds during the reflection period. There is no indication that Sinn Féin consulted these women either.

For this reason, and because this bill would inevitably lead to more abortions, it should be voted down.

As my local Oireachtas Member, I am calling on you to vote No at Second Stage and instead commit to supporting measures to reduce abortions and provide greater support for women and families.

I would appreciate a response from you on this vitally important matter.

Many thanks,
