Dear Oireachtas Member,
On account of Covid-19, in March of this year the then Minister for Health Simon Harris altered the way in which abortions are provided without any broad or prior consultation. He determined that women would no longer need to have a physical consultation before being prescribed the abortion pill.
This was a shocking move given that Minister Harris and then Taoiseach Leo Varadkar are on the public record from 2018 highlighting the serious risks posed to women’s health by self-administering abortion pills without proper medical consultation.
This very same ‘DIY abortion’ regime has resulted in the deaths of two women in England, as has been widely reported by the UK media. It was utterly reckless that these new guidelines were approved in Ireland. Abortion is never safe for the baby as it directly ends his or her life, but now we have a situation where women’s lives are also being put at risk.
In the interest of the welfare of women and their unborn children I am asking you to call on Stephen Donnelly, the Minister for Health, to end this regime of ‘abortions at home’, in order to prevent what has tragically happened in the UK.
We are living in a time when our country should be working as one to protect and defend every human life at every stage of development, rather than introducing measures that jeopardise women’s health and will inevitably lead to a further loss of life.
I would appreciate a response to my concerns,
Yours sincerely,
