To: TD – Mayo Constituency
Dep. Lisa Chambers
Dear Oireachtas Member,
As your constituent, I am asking you to strongly oppose the upcoming abortion Bill proposed by Deputy Ruth Coppinger TD.
The Bill seeks to repeal the Eighth Amendment, our last remaining constitutional protection for unborn children and their mothers.
We know for sure that the Eighth Amendment has been responsible for saving tens of thousands of Irish lives over the years. A recently commissioned independent actuarial report confirms that at least 100,000 people are alive today because of the life-saving provisions of the Eighth Amendment.
We have also seen the results of an abortion culture in other countries. In Britain for example, the shocking reality is that 90% of babies diagnosed in the womb with Down syndrome are aborted. And 1 in 5 pregnancies end in abortion. This is what happens once protection for children in the womb is stripped away.
Ireland needs to stop apologising for its abortion laws and reflect on the horror of what is happening in other countries. In the abortion debate, we are presented with two radically different visions of human rights. We cannot sanction abortion and also claim to defend human life.
If we are to become a truly progressive and caring society, we need to commit to policies that welcome everyone in life and protect everyone in law.
Again, I urge you to oppose Deputy Coppinger’s upcoming Bill. I would appreciate a reply to this email.
Yours sincerely
