PLC comments on FDA approval of embryo research clinical trials

23rd January 2009

In response to news that a U.S. biotech company has received FDA approval to commence clinical trials using human embryonic stem cells, a Pro-Life Campaign spokesperson said:

Human embryo research crosses a Rubicon. We cannot sidestep the fact that embryo research involves the destruction of a living human embryo.

There is certainly nothing progressive or enlightened about any procedure that results in ending human life.

We should keep in mind that each one of us was a human embryo at our fragile beginning and it would have constituted a shocking affront to our human dignity if someone had suggested ending our life based on an argument that the end justified the means.

All the stem cell research breakthroughs to date have involved the perfectly ethical adult stem cell research. Ireland with its limited resources should aim to become a centre of excellence for this kind of research and reject the notion of research that involves ending the lives of human beings at their earliest stages of development
